Realmente debo felicitarte!

Spanish virtuoso José Cháfer Mompó and his talented col- laborator, Rebecca Wilt, performed a stellar recital Thursday afternoon. Mompó and Wilt began their recital with James Stephenson’s L’ESPIRIT de la Trompette, which was filled with energy and drive. It was another well-deserved tribute to Stephenson at this conference. The world premiere perform- ance of Óscar Vidal’s I don’t understand this music incorporated speaking, mouthpiece buzzing, and extensive use of mutes. It was composed as a commentary on contemporary music and is quite entertaining. Mompó and Wilt also elegantly inter- preted works by Ewazen, McKee, and Baez. Mompó per- formed with an exceptional sound, stunning technique, and sensitive musical expression. He displayed great versatility and command of all styles throughout the recital. José Cháfer Mompó appears destined to make a significant impact on international stages in the years to come. (JB)

The review of the concert on 23rd October
There happen to be concerts that can immediately transfer you to some incredible fairyland. One of them was the concert given by an excellent Spanish trumpeter, Jose Chafer Mompo, whose performance at the 1st International Trumpet Conference in Lodz made time come to a standstill. Nobody even noticed that this musical feast, consisting of truly sophisticated dishes, took one hour and a half. For me it was much too short. Jose Chafer Mompo played brilliantly and perfectly at the same time. In his performance he combined a Spanish temperament with immense sensitivity. His sound – wonderful and exceptionally strong within the whole dynamic range – as well as his ability to play with timbres made the trumpet take on a whole new dimension. The instrument is totally under his control, thanks to which the artist achieves the ultimate virtuosity with particular ease and finesse. The program presented by the Spaniard, comprising pieces like L’esprit de la trompette by J.M. Stephenson or Vilapana Les Noces del Manya by Jose R. Pascual, shows how thoroughly he comprehends not only technical but also musical aspects. Although I attended numerous concerts given by great trumpeters, that one stirred up my emotions in particular. The opinion seemed to be shared by the audience that enthusiastically reacted to this unforgettable concert with standing ovation.
